Aufführung der 4. Symphonie durch das Wiener Konzertvereinsorchester unter Martin Spörr um 17 Uhr im Großen Musikvereinssaal in Wien. Solistin in Beethovens c-Moll-Klavierkonzert ist Margarethe Alt (*).
In The Salt Lake Herald-Republican Nr. 74 (Salt Lake City, Utah) berichtet auf S. 39 (= S. 23 des Zeitungsteils) John Jasper McClellan von seinem Berlin-Aufenthalt und von seinen Eindrücken im Konzert mit der 4. Symphonie [am 16.12.1912]:
"M'CLELLAN ATTENDS MANY OF BERLIN'S BIG MUSICAL OFFERINGS
[... Konzert der Klavierschule Alberto Jonas, Liederabend Alexander Heinemanns, Konzert der Berliner Philharmoniker (u. a. mit Werken von Humperdinck (Ovationen) und Braunfels) unter Rudolph Siegel ...]
* * *
We have Nikisch and the Philharmonic orchestra in a marvelously fine program, well nigh perfect in its rendition as given under the magic baton of Arthur Nikisch, the greatest conductor of the world, I believe. The contest is certainly between Nikisch and Weingartner.
The soloist was Conrad Ansorge, [... Beethoven G-Dur-Konzert (enttäuschend) ...] and the old gentleman was clearly nervous. In the audiance to be seen were Rosenthal, Sauer, Jonas, Siegfried Ochs, Von Strauss [Edward von Strauss?], Dr. Maschaert [recte wohl Messchaert], the lovely singer, Hutcheson, and also Madame Carreno, who came in very late. Sauer and Rosenthal sat together in the right front box, and they did more whispering during Ansorge's playing than listening.
Growing Old Rapidly.
In the years that have gone since my last Berlin visit I note that many of the big artists are growing old very rapidly. Nikisch is quite gray and stout, but yet the same elegant and graceful conductor. [... Sauer, Rosenthal, Jonas ...].
Ansorge is as solemn and phlegmatic as ever, but his "playing days are o'er."
I cannot tell you all about the program–will do so in next letter, as the concert afforded a perfectly sensational success for a 15-year-old protege of Nikisch [Korngold], whose overture (op. 4) showed him to be a master in embryo of the orchestra.
The other numbers, which included the Fourth symphony of A. Bruckner and the "Coriolanus" overture of Beethoven, will also be treated in next letter.
I do not believe it is generally known that Salt Lake has a cousin of the great German composer, Bruckner, in the person of Samuel Bruckner, the capable flute player who is often heard in our city." (**). [siehe die Anmerkung]
