The Manchester Guardian Nr. 23011 zieht auf S. 7 einen Vergleich zwischen Mahler und Bruckner:
"THE MAHLER FESTIVAL IN AMSTERDAM.
(From our Special Correspondent.)
The Mahler Festival in Amsterdam, at which the whole of Gustav Mahler's works are to be performed [... 25 Jahre Willem Mengelberg ... über Mahlers Karriere ...].
In composition he kept the naivety of the child throughout his days, and his music is still, on that account, a stumbling-block to the learned and the men of haste in our public musical life. He is in this aspect a disciple of Brückner, whose own music is still with us quite unknown in the bulk, and is still a rock of offence on account of its ponderous length and the naivety of its emotions. Both Brückner and Mahler composed a set of symphonies equal in number and more ponderous than those of Beethoven, and these works are still a challenge to our critical estimation. Both composers are gradually reaching the public ear in Germany, but the war has inevitably cut off the tentative appreciation ofour English public, and there is small prospect that we shall quickly regain the ear and patience for German works of this length and character. The Mahler Festival in Amsterdam comes, the, as an unexpected boon and opportunity to the musical enthusiasts of Western Europe.
[... die Bedeutung des Liedes für Mahler ... Mahler in England noch nicht heimisch ...]."
