In einem Konzertbericht in The Manchester Guardian Nr. 23787 auf S. 11, signiert "S. L.", wird die Stellung der Bruckner-Symphonien [prov. WAB 86] in England beleuchtet
"      THE HALLÉ CONCERTS.
[... über das gestrige Konzert ...].
The general popularising of orchestral music in England has so far done little for the symphony, which has rather been displayed by the many miscellaneous rivals for favor. We have even in England refused to make acquaintance with the latest symphonic writers, Bruckner and Mahler, though on the Comtinent they have steadily grown in favour, and are now in Germany, Austria, and Holland looked upon as favourite standard writers. In England, at least, no other post-Beethoven symphonies are held to compare with the four symphonies of Brahms. [... ausführlich über dessen Zweite Symphonie und die Möglichkeit, Musik poetisch zu beschreiben ...]. S. L."
