– The position which Dvorak, the composer, has recently taken respecting a school of American music based on negro melodies, has excited very widespread interest. Otto Florsheim, who is now in Vienna, writes to the Musical Courier of New York on the subject and says:
"I saw Anton Bruckner, Eusebius Mandyczewski, and Hans Richter in relation to Dvorak's idea. Bruckner said: 'The basis of all music must be classical works. Negro melodies could never found the groundwork of a school of music.' Mandyczewski expressed similar views, thinking his compatriot Dvorak was greatly influenced by his surroundings. Prof. Richter, who is the leader of the Imperial Court Opera, could not realize the possibility of a future school of music emanating from a race playing by ear. The Hungarian gypsies, he said, all play by ear–man, woman, and child; yet a real musician among them is an exception." ".
