Brief Bruckners an Oberleithner (Visitenkarte):
»[Anton Bruckner] Bittet Herrn von Oberleithner heute wenn möglich um 6 Uhr kommen zu wollen. A. Bruckner.« [wegen der 5. Symphonie?] (*).
The Illustrated Buffalo Express schreibt auf S. 21 der Ausgabe B in der 6. Spalte:
" MUSICAL THEMES.
A Great Symphony Brought Out in America.
GOSSIP OF MUSICIANS.
[... –Anton Bruckner– ...].
For the first time on record a symphony written by one of the greatest of European composers has been given its introduction to the public in this country. The event took place at the Philharmonic concert in Music Hall, New-York, yesterday, the work performed being Dr. Antonin Dvorak's fifth symphony entitled "From the New World." [...].
[... es folgt ein ausführliches Zitat aus dem Programmheft mit Erläuterungen zum Einfluss von "indian and negro melodies" auf die Symphonie "Aus der Neuen Welt", das Streichquartett und das Streichquintett ...].
[... Schuberts "Genoveva" etc. ...]
"Probably no composer of equal merit has been so undeservedly neglected in our times as Anton Bruckner, who will be 70 next April [sic]," says Henry T. Finck in the New-York Post. "Having had so little success with the public, he feels the more keenly the sting of professional criticism. It is [re?]lated that he was recently presented to the Austrian Emperor, who asked him to name a favor he could do him, when the composer replied: 'Please, your Majesty, tell Hanslick not to criticise my works so harshly!' It must be admitted that Bruckner is largely responsible for his own failures. He is too prolix; his eighth symphony, for instance, lasts an hour and a half, thus monopolizing a whole concert."
