Bericht von der gestrigen öffentlichen Generalprobe der 4. Symphonie in The Chicago Tribune Nr. 23 auf S. 5:
"THOMAS GIVES BRUCKNER'S SYMPHONY
First Rendition in America at the Chicago Orchestral Rehearsal Is Up to Expectation's Standard.

Anton Bruckner's "Romantic" Symphony No. 4. in E flat was given a first performance in America in yesterday's Chicago Orchestra rehearsal in accordance with a course pursued by Mr. Thomas in giving works that fit into the general educational plan and keeping audiences in touch with musical progress.
To be enthusiastic in behalf of the Symphony would be as difficult as it would unnecessary. Bruckner, as a man, devoted his life to music and to its furtherance from his point of view. While as a composer much must be withheld him, his example in art may serve a stronger one than people will now acknowledge.
This "Romantic" Symphony is interesting as a study of the composer's style and limitations. Beyond that it is a task upon the attention.
The work was finely played and evidenced arduous rehearsal.
The balance of the program was [... kurz zu den anderen Werken (Weber, Dvorak, Berlioz und Richard Wagner) ...].
The same program will be play [sic] in tonight's concert at the Auditorium." [keine Signatur] (°).

Bruckner ist auch der Hauptteil des Berichtes in The Chicago Chronicle Nr. 241 auf S. 6 gewidmet:
"               MUSIC AND THE DRAMA.
          CHICAGO ORCHESTRA CONCERT.
There was a good deal of refreshment for all sorts of lovers of music in the concert which Mr. Thomas and the Chicago orchestra gave yesterday afternoon. The overture [... Weber ...] was interpreted beautifully. Anton Bruckner's symphony No. 4, E flat, which was played for the first time in this country, demonstrated the right of this talented composer to a place among the great masters, and it at the same time was entirely grateful to the ear–to the expert musician, no doubt, much more. The other numbers on the programme [...]. The programme, to be repeated tonight, was as follows:
Overture–"Euryanthe" . . . . . .  Weber
Symphony–No. 4, E flat (romantic) . . . . . .  Anton Bruckner
Allegro molto moderato, andante, scherzo, finale.
[... Dvorak, Berlioz, Wagner ...]" [keine Signatur] (°°).
