" LETTERS FROM VIENNA - XV.

XVIII. Pulverthurm Gasse 16.
Vienna, Austria, Jan. 15, 97.
EDITOR PALLADIUM:– This has been a most delightful day, [... Wetter, Bau einer Hochbahn, Schaufenster von Blumenläden ...] and formed altogether a most attractive display. In the window of a music store we saw such a cute picture. The background was a dead white, all the figures were black, silhouettes, and a few golden stars twinkled in the sky; otherwise no color; at the right end of the picture sat Bach playing at an old fashioned organ. All of the other figures faced toward the left side of the picture to meet a new figure that was toiling up the stairs. Liszt and Rubinstein welcomed the arrival, (Bruckner, we thought) and behind them were Schumann, Schubert, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Hayden [sic]–all the great musical lights from Bach down. There was nothing else to the picture, the attraction consisting in the very striking likenesses of these men that made it possible for us to recognize them the instant our eyes alighted on them. Further on we came to the Stadt Park, which was our destination. [... Stadtpark, Beethoven-Denkmal, Schwarzenberg-Palais, Karlskirche, Ringstraße, Altstadt, Tobak-Trafik, Briefkästen, Rohrpost, Schulen mit Geschlechtertrennung ...].
