"            The Chicago Orchestra.
In a book of 320 pages or more, clearly printed on good paper and not disfigured by avertisements, the record of Theodore Thomas' sixth consecutive season in Chicago is preserved. The book is merely the programmes of the concerts given by the orchestra, now under management of Miss Anna Millar, and the analyses that occupy most of the book are written by Arthur Mees, the assistant of Mr. Thomas. These analyses are interspersed with biographical data, history, anecdote and so on, and are useful to the student of music, especially as they are illustrated by musical phrases and leading motives. It makes one think of old times here to read these admirable programmes, for nobody makes better ones than Thomas, and it makes one envious to think that Chicago can have forty-four of these concerts and rehearsals in a season, while we make a terrible to-do about half a dozen. [... Standardwerke von Beethoven bis Tschaikowsky ...]; but Chicago is getting its share of modern things, too, for here we read of works by Bruckner, Dvorak, Schoenfeld [... viele Erstaufführungen ...]. Well, they have gut-up-and-get in Chicago." (**).

Der Springfield Reporter Nr. 39 (Springfield, Vermont) bringt auf S. 7 wörtlich den vom 15.9.1897 bekannten Text:
"                    Music His Language.
The Viennese composer Bruckner, who died a few months ago, was noted for his bashfulness. It is related that when the University of Vienna made him an honorary doctor, after receiving his diploma, he got up to make a few remarks. But the words stuck in his throat, and he could not utter two coherent sentences. Finally he exclaimed, "If I only had my organ here I would know how to express myself." Then he sat down." (***).
