The Davenport Democrat and Leader Nr. 116 (Quad-City Times, Davenport, Iowa) bringt auf S. 20 einen ausführlichen Bericht über das Brüsseler Musikleben, in dem das Dirigat von Eugene Ysaye [bei der 9. Symphonie am 16.12.1906] geschildert wird:
" Mrs. Haase in Brussels.
Another Letter from Her Dealing With the Music of the Belgian Capital.
[In the letter appearing in The Sunday Democratof [sic] Feb. 24 Mrs. Hasse [sic] wrote of the music of Brussels describing some of the great artists who appear. In the following letter she coninues [sic] the same interesting subject.
Brussels, Belgium, February, 1907. – (Special correspondence of The Democrat.)–Undoubtedly, however, the most interesting of these orchestra leaders is Eugene Ysaye, known outside of his own country better as the great Belgian violin virtuoso, yet ranking with the world's best musical directors. [... ausführlich zur Dirigierbegabung, zum Auftreten vor Publikum und zum Dirigierstil ... Konzerte jeden Winter ...].
While Ysaye as a conductor is perhaps greatest when interpreting Beethoven, he is gifted with a rare versatility that enables him to comprehend and reflect the style and moods of modern composers equally well, [... speziell französische Komponisten ...]. Ysaye is intrepid in offering to the public their compositions even though they be strange to the musical taste which in Belgium has perhaps too strong a preference for the classics through the fact that the music-schools not only follow out an exclusively classical program but even show a sort of stubborn disregard for modern music. Thus Ysaye's first performance of Anton Bruckner's 9th symphony met with a rather cool reception and elicited from the critics such comments as "this musical monster by the Austrian composer was made palatable solely through the interpretation of Ysaye and his orchestra."
Of the soloists who have appeared before Brussels audiences this winter [... Pianisten, Cellisten, Geiger ... ausführlich zum Opernleben ... die Atmosphäre ...] makes Brussels fascinating and desirable for a longer sejourn.
AGNES S. HAASE."
