In einer Buchbesprechung in The Manchester Guardian Nr. 19359 auf S. 5 wird Bruckner erwähnt:
" NEW BOOKS.
GROVE'S DICTIONARY OF MUSIC.
[...] Edited by J. A. Fuller Maitland, M.A. in five vols. Vol IV., London: Macmillan and Co. Pp. vii. 808. 21s. net.
As this volume contains the articles on the principal forms of music, those on Reger and Strauss, and some consideration of the songs of Hugo Wolf, it fixes the attitude of the compilers towards modern music both theoretically and practically. It is far from sympathetic. Mr. Maitland fights for the purist metods and formal style of the absolute music as exemplified in the works of Brahms. [... Maitland hat Vorbehalte gegen Programmmusik (Strauss) ... Max Reger, Hugo Wolf ...].
Sir Hubert Parry adds little to his articles. He thinks the Third and Fourth Symphonies of Brahms more than fulfil the promise of the First and Second, but the best he can say for other composers is that the symphonies of Weingartner, Bruckner, and Mahler have achieved success in Germany on various dates, and that none are more remarkable than those of Tschaïkowski and Glazounow.
