"MUSICAL EUROPE.
I often think, writes Mr. Stokvis, that some musician might employ a leisure hour by drawing a map of Europe and instead of inserting the names of cities and rivers, writing down those of famous musicians at the places of their birth.
An idea of the ground covered by Mengelberg will be gained if some of the features of a winter's concerts are mentioned. In the prospectus of a past season we find details of the works to be given at the subscription concerts. To begin with, the classics are amply represented. Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Cherubini, Corelli, Gluck, Handel, Haydn and Mozart are all drawn upon.Berlioz is generously greeted, the "Symphonie Fantastique" and four other pieces being promised. Two symphonies of Bruckner, the "Faust" symphony of Liszt, six symphonies of Mahler, and five Strauss tone-poems are likewise included. [... andere Komponisten ...]." (**).
