   Wagner Festival Orchestra Rehearsals.
Eugen Gottlieb, one of the conductors of the Wagnerian Opera Festival to be given here in February, is already in New York at work organizing the orchestra and conducting the first rehearsals. Mr. Gottlieb is originally from Vienna; a nephew of Josef Hellmesberger, he began his career as a solo soprano in church at the age of seven. When he was ten he appeared as a pianist. Then he went to study at the Vienna Conservatory, where he studied piano with Schenner, organ with Vockner and Bruckner and composition with Robert Fuchs. Later he studied piano with Theodor Leschetizky and composition with Engelbert Humperdinck. Then he was chorus master under Mahler, and afterwards was engaged as conductor at Wiesbaden in what is now the Landestheater. Then he was active in Halle, Mainz, opera director at Bremen, and then he went to the "Teatro Real" in Madrid, where for two years he conducted nothing but the Wagner performances. Then Mr. Gottlieb went to Italy, where he conducted Wagner performances "as guest" in several cities. After two years in Hamburg he again began traveling, conducting in Vienna and Berlin, as well as smaller cities. He has conducted "Lohengrin" 152 times, and the whole "Ring" 42 times.
