Besprechung des gestrigen Konzerts durch Harold A. Strickland, signiert "H. A. S.", in The Brooklyn Times (Times Union, Brooklyn) auf S. 10:
"       MERO WITH MENGELBERG.
The concert by the Philharmonic Society last night in Carnegie Hall was distinguished by two events. In the first place, Yolanda Mero, Hungarian pianist, was the soloist and secondly, William Mengelberg offered Anton Bruckner's Ninth Symphony for the first time by the orchestra.
[... Liszt mit Verzögerung, da der Solocellist Cornelius Van Vliet eine neue Saite aufziehen musste ...].
Bruckner's last contribution to symphonic literature which, according to report, he intended to dedicate to "the dear Lord" in return for sparing him until it had been completed, was the first number on the evening's program. Living in the days when romanticism was coming to the fore, Bruckner in this finale plainly shows the influence of Wagner as he attempts to bridge the gap. Especially is this in evidence in the scherzo movement, which Mr. Mengelberg read with his usual fire. As the brasses entered with their thunder, one wondered what the radio listeners would hear as this very evidently "blasted the microphone." But the adagio was a beautiful picture of orchestral nuancing read "sehr langsam" yet not drawn out.
The prelude to "Die Meistersinger" was the other orchestral offering with conductor and orchestra giving a zestful reading.           H. E. S." (**).
