" The world will never hear the last of the proofs that Liszt had the noblest, biggest heart that ever beat in a musicians's breast. [... In describing a recent concert in Berlin under Richard Strauss, the programme of which was devoted chiefly to Liszt's first symphonic poem, "What One Hears on the Mountain," and Bruckner's third symphony, the correspondent of the Musical Courier writes:
On Monday, October 21st, this great genius, Richard Strauss, played for us the first of his six concerts, played with what is technically termed a "scratch" orchestra, and achieved for himself, his programme, and his men a unanimous, frenzied triumph, such as staid, stolid Berlin has rarely known in all the many years of its musical history. * * *
Liszt built his piece on the Victor Hugo poem of the same name. [... über das Werk ...]. " (**).
