The Guardian Nr. 17646 (London) erwähnt Bruckner und die 8. Symphonie [irrig! recte 3. Symphonie am 29.6.1891] in einem Leserbrief:
"                     CORRESPONDENCE.
                           THE SYMPHONY.
To the Editor of the Manchester Guardian.

Sir,–In the interesting critical estimate of Glazounoff's Seventh Symphony which you publish in your issue of to-day the writer is mistaken in the following paragraph:–"We now encounter his Seventh Symphony–a higher number than has been reached by another other composer since Beethoven." Spohr wrote seven symphonies, Niels Gade eight, Sir Geroge Macfarren eight, Bruckner eight, Franz Lachner eight, and Raff no fewer than eleven. The late Sir Charles Hallé produced Raff's Eleventh Symphony (for the first time in England) on February 27. 1890. The honour of producing Bruckner's Eighth Symphonie for the first time in this country fell to Dr. Richter, June 29, 1891, at St. James's Hall, London. [...].–I am, &c.,

                                             EDMONDSTOUNE DUNCAN.
Alexandra Road, Sale, Cheshire, February 27.
[Our musical critic writes:–"I assumed that when I said 'any other composer' I should be understood as meaning 'any other serious composer.' I am surprised to hear that Raff only wrote eleven symphonies. He might well have written fifty: and whether he wrote fifty, eleven or none at all makes not a particle of difference to any mortal."–Eb. "GUARD."]"
