" Tunings
Bruckner's Ninth Symphony (Unfinished) opened the concert of the Philharmonic Society last Friday afternoon at Carnegie Hall. This symphony, reminiscent of Wagner and Liszt, upon first hearing, taxed the ears of its listeners very little on account of its cinemalike sweetness of themes, but it is particularly hard to follow since the motifs do not evolve and and develop as in a truly great symphony. The work, as a whole, lacks harmonic unity. An allegro movement, perhaps lovelier than any other portion of the symphony, is so Wagnerian in its appeal that the Brucknerian influence becomes negligible. A lack of originality, parchiness of orchestral color, and a good deal of almost literal repetition in a valiant attempt at unity, render the work fearfully boresome.
