Aufführung des »Ecce sacerdos« unter Vinzenz Goller in Klosterneuburg (*).

 

The New York Times Nr. 20217 veröffentlicht auf S. 48 (= S. 12 des 5. Teils) einen musikalischen Reisebrief, in dem auch die Aufführung der 9. Symphonie [am 10.3.1913] besprochen wird:

THE High-Brow is not despised in Berlin, although the Low-Brow–it is only fair to capitalize these expressive phrases–receives more than his share of attention.

     Now in London and New York the High-Brow is not beloved of the box office. [... über das von Paris und Wien nicht erreichte Theaterleben in Berlin ... viele Beispiele ... Kino, Kabarett, Oper ... Otto Brahm †, Hermann Bahr, Theaterstücke ... war in Wien (Lob für Gurre-Lieder, neue Schreker-Oper) ... "Eugen Onegin" in Charlottenburg. "Tiefland", Dohnanyi ... "Tristan" unter Edward von Strauss an der Hofoper schrecklich ... über die Qualität der Orchester (Boston, New York, Wien, Leipzig und Dresden sind besser) ...]. The fact is that when Arthur Nikisch conducts the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra then that "ancient and honorable" body of perfectly respectable musicians becomes rhythmically conscious.

     The capital sin of German orchestral players is a sloppy rhythm; [...]

     [... nochmal über "Tristan" und andere Opern ...].

     A comical incident occurred here at the Royal Opera after the newly studied version of "Die Walküre." [...]. I went to the last, the tenth, Philharmonic concert under Nikisch. The programme was brief on paper, long in duration; the Ninth– unfinished – symphony of Anton Bruckner and the C minor of Beethoven, and it was curious to note how young and vital the thrice familiar Fifth sounded, and how antique, almost decrepit, is already the Bruckner work. With the exception of the Scherzo it is pretty hard going–the old chap never knew the value of economy. With his pupil, Mahler, Bruckner is likely to enjoy but a brief "immortality."

     But it was a great night for Arthur Nikisch, who has seemingly discovered the secret of perpetual motion as well as magnetism.

     The next time I saw him was at Leipsic, [... Paderewski mit Chopin ... über andere Pianisten (kritisch zu d'Albert) ...]." (**).

     Bestätigt den Empfang des Orchestermaterials der 1. Symphonie von Anton Bruckner [vgl. 23.5.1913]. Er werde mitteilen, wenn das Werk unter seiner Leitung aufgeführt wird. Bedankt sich für das Widmungsexemplar der Partitur dieser Symphonie (***).
